The incentive to go seriously into tides came from a number of directions. The study of Earth rotation had provided the initial fascination with the global dimensions of bodily and fluid tides. Further, the ultimate limit to the prediction of the tidal line spectrum is set by the low-frequency continuum, and this limit had been ignored by the tidal community, who had been spoiled by a favorable signal-to-noise ratio.
